Guide
What does a solar installation costin Switzerland?
In short
- Usually CHF 15’000 to 30’000 for a single-family house.
- The federal government refunds part of the cost through the one-off subsidy.
- Prices vary widely between solar companies.
Costs by size
What does each
installation size cost?
The output of a solar installation is stated in kilowatt peak (kWp). The larger the installation, the higher the price, but the cheaper each individual kilowatt becomes.
-
10 kWp
around CHF 20’000
approx. 50 m² roof area
Single-family house with average electricity consumption -
Popular choice
15 kWp
around CHF 28’000
approx. 75 m² roof area
With a heat pump or an electric car -
20 kWp
around CHF 36’000
approx. 100 m² roof area
With a heat pump and an electric car -
25 kWp
around CHF 44’000
approx. 125 m² roof area
Large roof, semi-detached house or small multi-family house
Guide values without battery storage, before subsidies.
Why quotes differ so much
The modules make up only a small part of the price. The difference comes from installation, scaffolding and the pricing of the solar company.
Extras
Battery storage and wallbox:
how much extra do they cost?
All extras are optional and can also be added later. What matters is how much solar power you want to use yourself.
-
Battery storage
Extra cost of around CHF 7’000 to 15’000
- Stores solar power from the daytime for the evening and night.
- Worthwhile above all if you use a lot of electricity in the evening.
-
Wallbox for your electric car
Extra cost of around CHF 2’000 to 3’000
- Charges your car with your own solar power.
- Cheapest if it is installed together with the system.
-
Bidirectional wallbox
Extra cost of around CHF 3’000 to 5’000
- Your electric car becomes a battery and returns electricity to the house.
- Only works with cars and wallboxes approved for this.
-
Backup power
Surcharge of around CHF 5’000
- Keeps supplying the house during a power cut.
- Requires battery storage and an inverter designed for this.
Our tip
Have the installation quoted with and without extras. That way, you can see what each one costs and what it brings.
Subsidy
Subsidy and
worked example.
The federal government pays a one-off subsidy for new solar installations from 2 kilowatts of output. It is paid out via Pronovo after commissioning.
Example: 15 kWp without battery
- Cost of the solar installation
- CHF 28’000
- One-off federal subsidy
- − CHF 5’400
- Your investment
- around CHF 22’600
Also possible
- Tax deduction, depending on canton and income
- Grants from your municipality or electricity utility
Who submits the application?
The solar company usually submits the application for the one-off subsidy on your behalf.

Is a solar installation
worth it?
That depends less on the purchase price than on what you do with the electricity. Three things are decisive.
-
Self-consumption
Every kilowatt hour you use yourself is one you do not have to buy. That is the biggest lever.
-
Feed-in tariff
Your electricity utility pays for electricity fed into the grid. For small installations, a minimum remuneration of around CHF 0.06 per kilowatt hour applies.
-
Service life
Solar modules last for decades. Today, the average product warranty is 15 years.
How to use more of your electricity yourself
A heat pump, an electric car and battery storage use the solar power when it is generated.
Frequently asked questions
Questions about the costs
of a solar installation.
What does a 10 kWp solar installation cost?
Around CHF 20’000 without battery storage and before subsidies. The exact price depends on your roof and the solar company.
What does a solar installation with battery storage cost?
Battery storage adds around CHF 7’000 to 15’000 to the price of the installation, depending on its size. A 10 kWp installation suits storage of 10 to 20 kWh. The federal government pays no one-off subsidy for the storage.
How high is the one-off subsidy?
For roof installations of 5 to 30 kilowatts, around CHF 360 per kilowatt peak. For 15 kWp, that is CHF 5’400.
What running costs does a solar installation have?
Mainly the inverter. It lasts 10 to 15 years, the solar installation itself 25 to 30 years. So expect one or two new inverters. Whether maintenance or monitoring comes on top, and what it costs, is stated in the quote.
Why do quotes differ so much?
The modules make up only a small part of the price. The difference comes from installation, scaffolding and the pricing of the solar company.
