Frequently asked questions
Questions about solar installations
in Winterthur.
Do I need a building permit for a solar installation in Winterthur?
Usually not. In most cases, roof installations can be built under the notification procedure; the installation is reported to the municipality before construction starts. In core zones and for protected buildings, a building permit may be required.
What subsidies are available in Winterthur?
The federal government pays the one-off subsidy via Pronovo. The City of Winterthur adds 50 percent of it through its energy subsidy programme. For installations from 30 kWp, it is 50 percent of the amount for 30 kWp. You apply online within six months of the decision from Pronovo.
How much do I receive for electricity I feed into the grid?
In the Stadtwerk Winterthur grid, a contract gives you fixed prices in 2026. From October to March you get 13 centimes per kilowatt hour, from April to September 10 centimes, guarantee of origin included. This applies to installations up to 100 kW with self-consumption. Without a contract, Stadtwerk pays the federal reference market price.
Who registers the solar installation with the municipality?
As a rule, the solar company does this for you. The notification goes to the City of Winterthur before construction starts; as the building owner, you confirm fire safety with your signature. If the city orders nothing else within 30 days of the acknowledgement of receipt, construction can go ahead.
